Catalogue Note

Eliza's sampler belongs to a well-balanced group known as the "elegant house" samplers of Newport, which appeared by 1773 and continued in modified form until 1835. Eliza Coggeshall (b. 1774) was the daughter of Billings Coggeshall (c. 1734-1810) and Lydia Hammett (1739-1829) of Newport. She married Peleg Kaighn on October 30, 1796.

They had eight Children. (Additional information provided by Carol and Stephen Huber).
