Condition

Overall the condition of the base is good. There is wear and some dirt to the surface consistent with age and handling with some rubbing to the gilding. There is a loss to one of the lower corners of the base. There are some minor losses to the enamel, particularly around the edges of each side, some of the lacunae have been filled. There are a few scratches to the underside The crown finial and the applied coat of arms are probably later.

Catalogue Note

Similar hexagonal bases with coats of arms can be found on travelling pricket candlesticks made in the second half of the 13th and 14th century. An example of such a candlestick with Italian arms can be found in the Victoria and Albert Museum (inv. no. M.579-1910).
