Condition

Overall the condition of the terracotta is good. There is some wear and dirt to the surface consistent with age. Two corners of the base were reaatahced. There is a restoration to one of the tips of the hat. There are a few minor chips including to both elbows and the edges of the drapery at the reverse. A naturally occurring stable firing crack runs between the vase and the figure.

Catalogue Note

Compare with the Flemish terracotta figure of St Ambrose sold in these rooms on 9 July 2008, lot 131, and the Flemish figure of an apostle sold at Christie's London on 13 December 1994, lot 90. The unusual hat is seen again, being worn by a Priest, in a terracotta group depicting the Circumcision of Christ by Giuseppe Maria Mazzuoli (1727-1781), offered at Christie's London on 10 November 2005, lot 183.
