Condition

Overall the condition of the wood is good. There is wear and some dirt to the surface consistent with age. There is some minor worming consistent with material There are several naturally occurring knots and stable splits to the surface including a larger split that runs from the top down through the boar's lower jaw. There are a few minor chips to the edges of the column.

Catalogue Note

The present column relates closely to a monumental beam terminating in serpent's heads that is on display at the Musée de Cluny in Paris (inv. no. Cl. 20376). Both have partially canted bases and animal heads seemingly biting in to the column.
