Condition

Original canvas. UV light reveals a handful of scattered spots of retouching, notably at the extreme edges. There are some areas of craquelure (visible in the catalogue illustration), notably in the centre of the composition, in the rocks in the centre left, and in the lower right corner. Held in a decorative gold-painted wood and plaster frame.

Catalogue Note

Although executed in Gurlitt's studio in Munich in 1836, the present work is based on a drawing of 1832 made in situ in the environs of Reisjaa, Norway (see: Schulte-Wülwer & Hedinger, 1997, p. 28, no. 123, drawing illustrated).
