Description

  • paper, paint
A group of three Indian Miniature paintings depicting stories from the life of Vishnu

Opaque watercolor heightened with gold on paper (each ca. 8 x 11 in.; 203 x 279 mm), North India, Rajasthan and Punjab Hills, late 18th / early 19th century; matted, glazed, and framed.

Catalogue Note

Two horizontal format illustrations to the Bhagavata Purana from Rajasthan, depicting scenes from Krishna's childhood: Krishna playing with the cows and with his doting father; and Krishna and Balarama with the village elders of Gokula. The third illustration from the Punjab Hills depicting Vishnu pacifying a white elephant that emerges from the waters of a lake, is possibly a reference to the Samudra Manthana legend in the Puranas.
