Catalogue Note

Jan Struther's verses, accompanied by Shepard's illustrations, first appeared in Punch and were collected, as a modern version of Heinrich Hoffmann's classic volume in 1936. This lot includes the title-page illustration together with a preliminary version of the upper cover. Both were exhibited in The Fine Art Society's E.H. Shepard exhibition in 2006.
