cast, embossed and chased with putti masks in strapwork, the rim engraved with cross in crest or corporation symbol, and number 600, marked on body and cast detachable foot

Condition

In overall good condition. The upper part of the cup slightly bent. Nice colour, gilding very slightly worn. Town mark legible on neck, maker's mark difficult to read, same place. Town mark on foot.

Catalogue Note

The  town mark appears to be that of Olomourc (Olmütz) in Moravia.  A number of other European towns have an eagle with similar splayed wings as its hallmark, but of these Frankfurt a.M  and Olomourc appear to be the only  examples where the eagle is crowned, has one head and looks to the left. The town mark for Olomourc for the relevant period as recorded by Rosenberg is clearly in a circular punch as it is on this cup, whereas the Frankfurt mark as recorded by Scheffler is in an an oval
