Description

  • Charles Howard Hodges
  • Silenus and Three Satyrs
  • pastel and paper mounted on canvas

  • 26 3/4 x 33 1/2 inches

Provenance

4th Duke of Marlborough, Woodstock, Oxfordshire;
William Kennedy, New York, 1991.

Literature

B.C.K., "Hodges, Charles Howard", in U. Thieme and F. Becker, Allegemeines Lexikon der bildenden Künstler, vol. XVII, 1924, p. 171 (as datable to 1789);
N. Jeffares, Dictionary of pastellists before 1800, London 2006, p. 249, reproduced in color.

Condition

The colors are fresh and strong, but there are some small retouched spots in the sky at the upper left and a small tear, 1 ½ inches in length. There are streaks in the pastel, most apparent in the lower left quadrant and on Silenus's robe, probably the result of some soft materials having brushed across the surface. There is a small water spot in the arm of the satyr at the far left and another on Silenus's robe. There are also a few tiny wormholes. The pastel is drawn on two sheets of paper, joined at the right, the vertical join barely visible running down through Silenus's head.

Catalogue Note

Hodges was mainly a portrait painter who also did copies and pastiches after old master paintings (the present pastel is based on details from paintings by Peter Paul Rubens). As Silenus and Three Satyrs is datable to 1789 (see Literature), it must have been executed in Dublin where Hodges went to work with C.G. Stuart; he remained there until 1792. He moved to Holland beginning in 1810 and died in Amsterdam in 1837.
