Catalogue Note

The brilliance of Sencer Vardarman is in his unique approach to his subject matter. Vardarman's TV-Scapes series comprise of surreal, neo-romantic compositions created by combining still images from recorded documentaries and television news. The "beautiful, catastrophic landscapes", as the artist calls them, are a critique of the tendency of reporters, scientists, and advertisers to alter imagery in order to publicly convey a controlled and calculated message. In Rain, using fifty different images, Vardarman transforms scenes from a bombing in Lebanon and a hurricane in the United States into a meticulously connected and haunting imaginary devastation.
