Condition

The canvas has not been lined. Ultraviolet light reveals just a few scattered tiny spots of retouching, notably to the right of the man with the plough in the middle-ground (the retouching slightly discoloured and just visible in the catalogue illustration), which are very minor given the overall size of the work. There are very faint stretcher marks corresponding to the horizontal and vertical stretcher bars (crossing in the centre) and parallel to the upper edge. Overall this work is in good condition, and its appearance could be further enhanced with a surface clean. Held in a decorative gilt and grey-painted frame. The catalogue illustration is overall accurate, however the sky is richer and the red of the bending lady's dress is somewhat more vibrant in reality.
