Condition

Original canvas. Ultra-violet light reveals some scattered minor spots of retouching to the man, notably in his right cheek and to one of the fingers of his left hand. Apart from a minor area of paint shrinkage visible below the skull under close inspection, overall the painting is in good condition and is ready to hang. Presented with its original frame by Kovacic (see catalogue note and photograph), in good condition. Painting and frame are offered with their waxed and stained pine and plywood case, with a suede lining.

Catalogue Note

The present work was inspired by the macabre poem Il Canto del Odio (The Ballad of Hatred) written in 1877 by the Italian poet Olindo Guerrini (1845-1916), whose nom de plume was Lorenzo Stecchetti.
