En 1979, s'ouvrait à Paris le Centre Wallonie-Bruxelles, première vitrine culturelle de la Communauté Wallonie-Bruxelles créée dans le monde.
Dès sa création, le lieu sera doté d'œuvres d'artistes majeurs : un bas-relief sculpté par Félix Roulin, une fontaine musicale conçue par Pol Bury, deux grandes compositions murales imaginées par Pierre Alechinsky, un rideau de scène signé Jean-Michel Folon et une fresque dessinée par...Hergé ! Le père de Tintin et Milou fut donc le premier auteur du Neuvième Art à être célébré dans l'enceinte du Centre. Un honneur parmi d'autres rendus à Hergé pour le cinquantenaire de la naissance de Tintin.
Mais où est l'escalier ?
Ce 26 septembre 1979, Hergé avait tout lieu d'être heureux : non seulement, on inaugurait dans le Centre Wallonie-Bruxelles de Paris une fresque tout à la gloire de la série des aventures de Tintin, mais de plus, on proposait au public de découvrir au même endroit Le Musée imaginaire de Tintin, une exposition aussi belle qu'instructive.
La conception de cette fresque, qui devait venir prendre place sur le mur d'un escalier menant du hall d'entrée au foyer du Centre Wallonie-Bruxelles, ne fut pas une mince affaire. Il fallait non seulement tenir compte de la configuration particulière de cet escalier – ses déclivités spécifiques – mais aussi veiller à bien répartir les différents personnages retenus pour y figurer en grandeur nature et cela, sur une dizaine de petits murs répartis en accordéon sur toute la surface concernée. Si le résultat fut à la hauteur des espérances, il en alla tout autrement pour l'escalier qui devait être construit au pied de la fresque : il ne vit jamais le jour ! Trente-trois ans plus tard, les visiteurs du Centre s'étonnent toujours de cette étonnante composition qui leur fait voir Tintin, Milou, le capitaine Haddock, le professeur Tournesol, les Dupondt et bien d'autres membres de cette grande famille de papier descendre des marches tout bonnement réduites à de simples traits noirs sur les murs !
Reflets d'un univers
La fresque réalisée par Hergé et ses collaborateurs se voulait témoigner de l'univers fascinant des aventures de Tintin, à travers quelques-uns de ses personnages les plus emblématiques, nonobstant la présence de plusieurs seconds rôles, toutefois tout aussi importants dans la conduite de l'action que les « vedettes » comme Bianca Castafiore, Tchang, Séraphin Lampion ou Nestor. Par certains objets, elle évoque aussi la pluralité des mondes visités par Tintin et les continents traversés : fusée lunaire, bouteille de Loch Lomond, champignon de L'Étoile Mystérieuse, totem du chevalier de Hadoque, perroquet des îles lointaines, idéogrammes chinois ou yéti des sommets himalayens, tout est là pour nous ramener à ces milliers de pages des récits imaginés par le maître de la Ligne Claire. Et pour ne pas gâcher la fête, bien que présents sur la fresque, les vrais méchants, Allan Thompson et Roberto Rastapopoulos, ont le visage habilement caché, le premier par celui de Tournesol, le second par un jet de salive de lama !

Une telle réalisation ne s'improvise pas, raison pour laquelle Hergé prit son temps de dessiner avec soin l'ensemble de la composition ; un ensemble très attrayant qui fut reproduit sous forme d'une lithographie offerte aux invités de l'inauguration du Centre Wallonie-Bruxelles à Paris, le 26 septembre 1979. Limitée à 300 exemplaires, signée par Hergé, elle fut encartée dans un portfolio dans lequel figuraient d'autres reproductions de grands artistes belges. Portfolio présenté lors de cette vente. Le dessin d'origine, de 42 x 20 cm, avait été réalisé à l'encre de Chine et colorié à la gouache, à l'aquarelle et à l'écoline. C'est à partir de ce travail que furent ensuite réalisés les croquis définitifs qui allaient être reproduits dans la fresque. On notera au passage les modifications, les différences et les nuances apportées à la création de départ. On notera surtout la perfection du trait et le soin mis à colorier les surfaces dans ces quatre originaux, produits exemplaires de la petite fabrique de rêves des Studios Hergé !
In 1979, opened in Paris the Wallonie-Brussels center, the first cultural showcase of the Wallonia-Brussels created in the world. In an area of 1000 m2 in the heart of one of the oldest parts of the French capital, just in the opposite to the Georges Pompidou Center, the public, both French and foreign, would discover the art and culture of the French speaking Belgium through its most beautiful creations.
From its inception, the place will feature works by major artists: a bas-relief sculpted by Felix Roulin, a musical fountain designed by Pol Bury, two large mural compositions designed by Pierre Alechinsky, a stage curtain by Jean-Michel Folon and a mural drawn by Hergé ...! The father of Tintin was the first author of the Ninth Art to be celebrated in the Center. An Honour among others to Hergé for the fiftieth anniversary of the birth of Tintin.
It's actually in 1929 that the young reporter was born, in the Petit Vingtième, targeting young people who joined every Thursday the newspaper Le Vingtième Siècle.The hero will experience an exceptional longevity and his adventures, translated into many languages, would amaze generations of readers around the world. Cinquante ans de travaux fort gais, as reflected in the title of a superb brochure produced by Casterman editions about the working method of the illustrator, were being honored by all sorts of tributes and memorials from the first Belgian stamp dedicated to Tintin through a currency inspired by the hero; And all this when the albums of the famous reporter exceeded got through 60 million albums sold!
But where is the staircase?
This September 26, 1979, Hergé had every reason to be happy: not only was inaugurated in the Wallonie-Bruxelles center in Paris a mural drawn in honor of the Tintin series, but again, it was proposed to the public to discover in the same place Le Musée imaginaire de Tintin, an exhibition as beautiful as instructive. Thirty-three years later, visitors of the center are often astonished that this amazing composition that makes them see Tintin, Snowy, Captain Haddock, Professor Calculus, Thomson and Thompson and other members of this family of paper stepping down simply, reduced to simple black lines on the walls!
Reflections of a universe
The fresco by Hergé and his colleagues wanted to witness the fascinating world of the adventures of Tintin, through some of his most iconic characters , notwithstanding the presence of several supporting roles, as equally important in the conduct of action as "stars" like Bianca Castafiore, Tchang, Jolyon Wagg or Nestor. For some objects, it also evokes the plurality of the worlds visited by Tintin and the crossed continents: moon rocket, bottle of Loch Lomond, mushroom of The Shooting Star, totem of the knight Haddock, parrot of the remote islands, Chinese characters or the yeti of the Himalayan peaks, everything is there to take us back to the thousands pages of stories imagined by the master of the Clear Line. And not to spoil the party, although present on the fresco, the real villains, Allan Thompson and Roberto Rastapopoulos, have their faces cleverly hidden, the first by Professor Cumulus and the second by a stream of llama's saliva.
Hergé in charge!
Such an achievement can't be improvised, this is why Hergé took his time to draw carefully the whole composition; a very attractive set which was reproduced as a serigraph offered to guests of the inauguration of the Wallonie Brussels-Paris Center, September 26, 1979.
Limited to 300 copies, signed by Hergé, it was made into a card in a portfolio, which included other reproductions of great Belgian artists. This The portfolio is presented at this auction. The original drawing, from 420 to 200 mm, was made in India ink and colored in gouache, watercolor and ecoline. It is from this work that were then realized the final designs reproduced in the fresco.
We can also note the amendments, the differences and nuances in the initial creation. We can especially notice the perfection of line and the care taken to color the surfaces in these four originals, exemplary products of the small factory of dreams of Hergé Studios!
