Catalogue Note

An emblem of the unity of heaven and earth and a symbol of fertility and abundance, the double-gourd motif was used extensively in the decorative arts of the 18th century. A form popular in many different media, this particular vase is notable for its large size. It may be compared to another double-gourd shaped cloisonne enemal vase bearing a Qianlong mark in the Uldry Collection, illustrated in Helmut Brinker and Albert Lutz, Chinese Cloisonne. The Pierre Uldry Collection, Zurich, 1985, p. 294.
