Condition

Overall very good original condition. This piece is a true masterwork exhibiting all the elements that have come to distinguish the work of Dupré-Lafon. The top of the table is executed in trademark red Hermès leather that has acquired a beautiful darkened patina with age. Each of the panels shows some light surface scratches from use. With three minute nicks (less than 1/8 inch) to the leather that reveal the natural untreated leather. These three nicks are in two panels at opposite ends of the table and only visible on close inspection. The wooden frame is in very good condition with a few minor scratches and some darkening from age. The white areas visible in the catalogue illustration are recessed with more concentrated evidence of the liming finish. The liming overall is very subtle and with some possible very minor evidence of wear. The brass circular hardware appears to have been lightly cleaned and all remain intact. The metal feet with expected rubbing to finish and surface scratches from use. The parchments covered elements to the top section of the standards with some surface scratches and discoloration from aging. With discolorations that are darker in color and are concentrated to the edges of the parchment and are the result of the glue used to adhere the parchment discoloring the paper. Please note the measurement of the masterwork as it is monumental in size. This work is a superb statement of Dupré-Lafon’s design aesthetic.

Catalogue Note

The present lot epitomizes Dupré-Lafon's mature design aesthetic:  linearity, decadent materials, purity of form and harmonious proportions.  The rich red Hermès leather panels decorating the top introduce both a luxurious and soft quality to the design, as well as a bold statement of color.  In contrast to the rich color is the limed oak frame and brass feet, which are designed to introduce a weightlessness, as the work seemingly hovers above the floor.  In the production of this console each detail was carefully considered and selected, and the result is a true masterpiece.  As reviewer Bernard Champigneulle stated in 1929, Dupré-Lafon’s designs “satisfied both the spirit and sense of comfort while maintaining perfect elegance.”

This lot is sold with an original certificate of authenticity from the legal successors of Paul Dupré-Lafon.
