Condition

Remnants of old mat at left and bottom edge of recto, old adhesive in spots along edges of verso. Paper is wavy with foxing throughout composition and a few small scuffs at lower right, lower left, and near the figure’s lower thigh, a ¼ inch horizontal tear at center left edge near figure’s head. Paper is now affixed to new back mat with two paper hinges at top edge.

Catalogue Note

As Martin Dieterle explains though Corot did travel to Italy in 1834 he did not stop in Rome. The artist visited the city in 1843 where he made several academic drawings. As with the present work many of these drawings were signed in later years, the artist mistaking the date of execution.
