The paper had been laid down on thick card. The paper's edges have been irregularly cut or torn but it does not disturb the image which is fox marked throughout, most noticeably in the upper register.

The present work is probably the original compositional design among several preparatory sketches by Leighton for The Daphnephoria of 1874-6 (Lady Lever Art Gallery, Port Sunlight, Liverpool).
