Catalogue Note

Edmund Routledge was a member of the firm of publishers George Routledge & Sons. Between 1867 and 1876 Crane provided illustrations for Routledge's enormously successful Sixpenny and Shilling Toybooks. These inexpensive books became known as 'Walter Crane's New Series' and were the most popular children's books of the day.
