Catalogue Note

A handsome copy in a contemporary panelled binding of the "B" edition of Gulliver's Travels.

The first printing of Gulliver's Travels appeared on 28 October 1726. It was succeeded by two further editions by Motte in the following two months (Teerinck AA and B). However it was the edition of May 1727 that Motte designated the "Second Edition". The present copy is therefore the third of three distinct editions which are by convention, and in deference to the publisher, known collectively as the first edition.

The practice of including the "Keys" to Gulliver's Travels, some of which were printed separately with frontispiece, title, additional verses and advertisements in the autumn of 1727 (see Teerinck 1215), began with this "B" edition. However many copies do not contain them.
