Catalogue Note

This shape was named after a town in Minorca, the site of a great French victory in 1756 during the Seven Years' War.  For a discussion of this shape and an example in the J. Paul Getty Museum, see Adrian Sassoon, Vincennes and Sèvres Porcelain, 1991, pp. 72-73, no. 14.  It is possible this cuvette is one of a pair with this decoration sold in the second half of 1760, op. cit., footnote 31.  There is a drawing for the third size of this shape in the Sèvres archives dated August 1759, and given the date on this example it would seem to be one of the earliest examples produced in this size.
