Catalogue Note

These salts are based on early 19th century designs by Auguste Moreau and Adrien-Louise-Marie Cavelier, and are reproduced in J-M Pinçon and O. Gaube du Gers, Odiot l' orfèvre, Paris, 1990, p. 113, figs. 178 and 179.  This model was used by both Jean-Baptiste Claude Odiot and his son, Charles-Nicolas, and is considered to be the best of Odiot design.  It has thus been described as "un des grands classiques de l'orfèvre".  Between 1826 and 1838 Charles-Nicolas Odiot produced a set of six salts of this model, now in the collection of the King of Sweden (Pinçon and Gaube du Gers, 1990, p. 113).  Another pair is illustrated A. Phillips and J. Sloane, Antiquity Revisited English and French Silver-gilt from the Collection of Audrey Love, London, 1997, No. 37, pgs 120-21.
