Catalogue Note

This exceptional Lesghi long rug with its multi-layered design, fine weave and extensive palette displays all of the criteria of East Caucasian weaving in its highest form. Although intricate, its profusely decorated format is well balanced as a result of the juxtaposition of the vertically-arranged large stars woven in contrasting colors and the irregularly scattered small secondary design elements. The color palette is outstandingly fresh with its hues being most striking in the second and fourth Lesghi stars where soft ivory is paired with rich yet brilliant indigo. This lot also utilizes soft, lustrous wool, with the oxidized browns creating a low relief effect in areas. This quality, coupled with the juxtaposition of colors, creates an aesthetically pleasing and invitingly tactile piece. A Lesghi rug with comparably fine weave, complex design and rich colors was sold Sotheby's New York, 4 June 1988, lot 69.
