Condition

The work is in good condition, as is the canvas. Indications of minor wear and handling are found along the edges and margins of the painting, along with the associated paint infil or restoration (most notably on the upper right edge), which are consistent with the age of the work and is apparent only under ultraviolet light. Examination under ultraviolet light also reveals scattered areas of retouching, primarily on the upper right quadrant (notably on the tree trunks, the rocks / cliff, the background surrounding the figures' silhouettes and shadows, as well as some scattered minor spots on the figures themselves ) but these are not apparent to the naked eye. Although there are soft craquelures, the paint layers and impasto are well preserved and the work appears to be in good and sound condition overall. The colours of the actual painting are richer and brighter in reality compared to those in the catalogue illustration. Framed.

Catalogue Note

"What causes me to go to Realism? Realism for me is more reel ['real']. If someone takes Yogya, I want to fight for Yogya for reel. If I have not eaten, I must eat rice. Reel rice. If I fight for sovereignty, I want reel sovereignty. I do not want [it] symbolic. If one is not sated, it is not real. European painting, before the Renaissance, followed the realistic. 'Ism', ultimately, is just an aid for speech."
