Catalogue Note

On 2 January 1787, Catherine the Great began her voyage to Crimea. The trip was unprecedented in its scale, expense, number of participants and lasted over half a year.  On 28 May the Empress arrived to Feodosiya, the final stop of her journey. There she visited the mint of the former khan where two gold medals were made commemorating the journey.  Prince Potemkin presented one to the Austrian Emperor Joseph II and another to Catherine the Great.
