Thence by descent

Condition

Original canvas. There is a layer of surface dirt. There are scattered small areas of paint loss in the lower left section and the lower edge and a few lines of raised craquelure in the lower left corner. There are lines of craquelure throughout and minor flecks of paint loss elsewhere. The varnish has discoloured. UV light reveals some retouching to the background in the right hand side and in places to the lower half. An opaque layer of discoloured and uneven varnish prevents a more conclusive examination. Held in an ornate gold painted plaster frame. Unexamined out of frame.

Catalogue Note

Count Villagonzalo established a close friendship with Tsar Nicholas II during his period in office in St Petersburg. In 1899 he was awarded the Imperial Order of St Alexander Nevsky.

He is mentioned in the Tsar's diaries. "Saturday 20th April, 1896. The day was marvellous and bright. The two of us went on a short walk and found masses of anemones. After breakfast I received Count Vollagonzalo, previously the Spanish representative, now the ambassador here."
