Description

  • Evening in Crimea
  • signed in Cyrillic and dated 1895 l.r.
  • oil on canvas laid on board
  • 36.5 by 59cm, 141/2 by 23 1/4 in.

Condition

The canvas has been laid down on board. There is a layer of light surface dirt and discoloured varnish. There are a couple of very small chips to the paint surface in the lower right-hand quadrant and another two minor flecks in the top-left quadrant. There is some evidence of light abrasionto the inner frame edges in the upper and lower right-hand corners. There are patches of craquelure visible where paint has been applied most thickly, for example the moon and the cliffs. There is evidence of crude sweeping restoration to the sky which could be minimised by a professional restorer. The examintaion under UV light confirms the aforementioned restoration to the sky as well further retouching to the left-hand corner and other spots elsewhere. However, the presence of an opaque layer of varnish prevents a more conclusive examination. Held in a gold-painted modern wooden frame. Unexamined out of frame.
