  • height of orange tub 3 3/4 in.
  • 9.5 cm
(caisses à fleurs carrées 3e grandeur) each reserved on each side with a gilt floral and foliate scroll-edged landscape panel and mounted with a leafy gilt-metal stem of soft-paste porcelain tulip blossoms, one with interlaced L's, date letter C and unidentified decorator's mark in blue enamel, both with incised numeral 8.

Condition

Please note: the porcelain has not been examined beneath the mounts. One has an old .5cm rim chip and associated 2cm deep scratch extending downwards into the panel. The tulip petals have some chips and losses and some repairs to the petals of the larger tulips.

Catalogue Note

Orange tubs were produced in three sizes and references to examples corresponding to the second size are first mentioned in the factory records in 1753-54, while the first and second sizes appear in 1754.  A similar bleu céleste-ground orange tub of the first size, (one of two) painted with flower panels, is illustrated by Carl Christian Dauterman, The Wrightsman Collection, Volume IV, p. 104, nos. 77A, B; and two, also painted with flower panels, Property of The Metropolitan Museum of Art, were sold by Sotheby's Monaco, May 26, 1980, lot 327.
