Catalogue Note

Princess Augusta Sophia, second daughter of George III and Queen Charlotte, inherited her mother's house at Frogmore and part of her plate.  On Augusta's death in 1840 her brother Ernest, by then King of Hanover, acquired her plate rather than have it be dispersed at public auction.

The gilt servers were part of an extensive Hourglass pattern dessert service of 1806; part of this was sold Christie's New York, October 15-16, 1985, lot 149.
