Provenance

Private collection, Granada, Spain, by 1955.

Literature

U. Hoff and M. Davies, 'National Gallery of Victoria, Melbourne', in Les primitifs flamands 1, vol. 12, Brussels 1971, under cat. no. 134, p. 62, no. 6.

Condition

The actual painting is a little lighter in tone than the catalogue illustration suggests. The single panel is sound, though cradled to the reverse for no obvious reason. The paint layer is slightly beginning to lift to the upper centre, but otherwise, the paint layer is generally sound. There's a minor retouched paint loss in the background centre right and some minor scattered retouchings can be made out with the naked eye. The paint surface is under a somewhat dirty varnish. Inspection under UV light reveals additional strengthening in the figures of Mary and Christ and in Mary's cloak.Offered in a decorative moulded gold painted frame in fair condition.
