Description

  • Hendrick Cornelisz. Vroom
  • A Dutch man-of-war and other flagships near a Dutch fortified town
  • oil on panel

Condition

The actual painting is more blue and brighter in tone than the catalogue illustration suggests. The single piece of panel is bevelled to all sides and slightly bowed. No major damages seem to be apparent. A few tiny paint losses can be seen in the lower left corner and along the lower edge. There are quite a few, rather crude, retouchings in the sky and in the sails of the ship in the centre, which would definitely benefit from redoing. The three ships in the foreground however, seem untouched and are still very nicely preserved. The paint surface is under a thick and dirty varnish layer. Inspection under UV light reveals this thick and uneven varnish and the rather crude retouchings as mentioned above. Offered in a plaster gilt wood frame, with leaf decoration, a few chips. (ML)
