Description

  • A triptychcentral panel: The Coronation of the Virginleft wing: Saint John the Baptist with a kneeling donorright wing: Saint Baldwin with a kneeling donor
  • oil on panel, with the original wood frame

Condition

The actual painting is a bit less red and shows more detail than the catalogue illustration suggests. The central panel consists of two planks, joint vertically and is cradled. The wings consist of one plank each and can not be viewed from the back as they are covered with a piece of black wood. The paint surface seems to be in quite good condition, with no major damages apparent. Some discoloured retouchings can be seen in the whites and greys as well as in the skies. The paint layer is under a slightly dirty varnish layer and has a fine and dense craquelure pattern which varies in places. Inspection under UV light confirms the retouchings as mentioned above and some additional tiny ones along the edges and a few tiny ones in the figures. Offered in a shaped, gilt wood frame, in fair condition. (ML)
