Strasbourg School, mid 17th Century

The canvas has an old relining. The detail of the painting and its colours are well-preserved but it is somewhat flat and a little dirty, under a thick layer of varnish. There are two vertical lines, possibly old folds, visible on the surface of the painting approximately 5 and 7 cm. in from the right hand margin. These seem to have been finely retouched. A fine craquelure runs throughout the painting and scattered old retouchings to this can be discerned, as well as a handful of scattered retouchings to the fruit. There is a small knock to the lower left hand corner where the paint has lifted a little, but no other damages are discernible. Inspection under UV light is impeded by the reflective varnish but confirms the aforementioned retouchings and seems to reveal extensive retouchings to the periphery of the painting. Some further scattered spot retouchings to the fruit are revealed but these are few and unobtrusive. Offered in a carved and gilt wood frame in good condition, if a little dirty.
