Catalogue Note

Esaias van de Velde was the second son of the art dealer Hans van den Velde (1552-1609). Though it is believed Esaias studied under David Vinckboons, his works clearly depart from the fantastical, Mannerist tradition of landscape painting and rather portray the natural world simply and realistically. His use of chiaroscuro, here swathing the left foreground of the painting in shadow, adds definition to his composition; a technique which is also apparent in the landscapes of Esaias' pupil, Jan van Goyen.
