Condition

Both sold in attractive frames and mounts. The Shearwater has a few minor, isolated fox marks, but is otherwise clear and the watercolour very fresh. The paper for the Eider Drake is slightly yellowed, and has some isolated pale foxing, mainly near the left and upper edge. Otherwise in good condition, the watercolour strong.

Catalogue Note

Little is known of the bird painter Peter Paillou, except that he worked for the naturalists Sir Joseph Banks and Thomas Pennant. 
The Iceland Falcon is also known as the Gyrfalcon.  Another watercolor by Paillou of the bird was sold London, Sotheby's, 19 October 1989, lot 673.  See also the following lots.
