Provenance

With Henry Graves & Co., London (L.2990);
sale, Leipzig, C.G. Boerner, 9-10 May 1930, lot 513 (as Esaias van de Velde);

Window mounted. Paper rather discoloured, but less so in the corners, where old glue seems to have protected the sheet from the adverse effects of a previous mounting. A little light foxing and staining. Ink and wash good and strong.

Catalogue Note

Klotz was a very accomplished landscape draughtsman with a distinctive, charming style, whose works do not perhaps enjoy the reputation that they should.  In particular, his more freely executed landscape sketches, such as this example or the recently sold View of a Watermill near Maastricht,1are of excellent quality.
