Catalogue Note

The present painting is believed to be the earliest recorded work by George Lambert, who was widely regarded by contemporaries as 'the English Poussin'. In its broad handling it shows the influence of John Wootton, which is charateristic of much of Lambert's work in the early 1720s, yet the harmonious composition of the painting displays an early understanding of the work of Gaspard Dughet.
