Collection of Prof. Hans Best, Munich (1874-1942) (according to an inscription on the reverse).

Condition

The canvas has an old relining and has a 5cm. addition to the top edge. The painting has fairly recently been cleaned and restored and is in fairly good overall condition. The varnish is shiny but clear. Inspection under UV light reveals quite extensive and fastidious spot retouching to the darks, with some further local retouchings to the face and the hands and to the left background. There is a repaired 2 by 2cm damage on the man's left shoulder. The canvas addition and above it has been repainted. Offered in a modern parcel gilt wood frame in good condition.
