Gold and agate pendant/ brooch, Castellani, circa 1855
Designed as an owl's head, decorated throughout with granulation and filigree work designed to represent the feathers, the eyes of banded agate, signed on the reverse with interlaced C's.

During the 1850's Castellani experimented with ancient gold work techniques, particularly with the Etruscan method of granulation.  The Castellani archive mention the craftsman Giuseppe Cresciati who, in the mid 1850's, worked on a spilla civetta, an owl brooch.
