Condition

Executed on cream wove sketchbook paper, not laid down, and attached to the double-sided mount. The paper is perforated at the edges, which is original to the artist’s sketchbook; there is a centre seam with pinholes that have widened slightly, all associated with the original binding. The left side of the perforated edge has separated approximately three-quarters of the way down the sheet, and there is a very small perforation and tear at the top of the right edge. There is some slight discolouration, mostly at the edges, and a few tiny pin-dots of foxing towards the edges. Overall, this work is in good condition.

Catalogue Note

PROPERTY FROM A PRIVATE COLLECTION (Lots 250-252)

The following three lots were originally part of a rare and important sketchbook dating from 1905 in which Picasso executed numerous studies for his first major large-scale painting of the Rose period, Famille de Saltimbanques. The sketchbook remained in the artist's possession until his death whereupon it was inherited by his granddaughter Marina Picasso.

John Richardson
John Richardson, A Life of Picasso, 1881-1906, New York, 1991, vol. I

'Pablo has brought back to the studio a young girl found I don't know where whom he is going to do as Joan of Arc. Bizarre-looking rather than beautiful with bright red hair and large, rather coarse but good features. She started posing two days ago. But last night I realized she must have been crawling with lice, as both of us have caught them.'
