  • AN 18K YELLOW GOLD AND ENAMEL HUNTING CASED WATCH MADE OF THE TURKISH MARKET WITH PORTRAIT OF SULTAN ABDULMECID MADE FOR THE TURKISH MARKETCIRCA 1846
  • yellow gold and enamel
  • diameter 53 mm
-- gilt full plate lever movement -- white enamel dial, Turkish numerals, eccentric subsidiary seconds -- the cover with polychrome enamel portrait of Sultan Abdulmecid I  in military uniform wearing the Order of Iftihar Nisani, enamel boarder surrounded by finely engraved foliate decoration, the rear of the case with red enamel monogram surmounted by a crown within a cartouche -- dial and movement signed -- hallmarked London 1846

Condition

The movement is fully wound and not running at the time of cataloguing, the balance will rotate as power is applied to the train. The dial is in good condition. The button to the bow to open the case is lacking. The enamel portrait is scratched and there are scuffs throughout the case.

Catalogue Note

Sultan Abdulmecid I was born April 1823 and succeeded his father Mahmud II on the 2nd July, 1839. He tired to forge alliances with the United Kingdom and France, who fought alongside the Ottoman Empire in the Crimean War against Russia. His greatest achievement was the announcement of the Tanzimat reforms which effectively started the modernisation of the Ottoman Empire. He died of tuberculosis in June 1861.
