Description
- AN 18K YELLOW GOLD, ENAMEL AND DIAMOND-SET OPEN-FACED WATCHCIRCA 1870 NO 12382
- diameter 36 mm
• nickel lever movement, glazed cuvette • black enamel dial, white Roman numerals spaced by periwinkle fleurs-de-lys, outer periwinkle Arabic numerals for minutes, Louis XVI-style hands • bezels enhanced by white enamel ornamentation, the reverse with RTS monogram set with numerous rose-cut diamonds • case, dial and movement signed Tiffany & Co., Geneva • with an 18k gold brooch set with black enamel and identical monogram
Condition
The watch is running at the time of cataloguing, however it may require service soon. The dial is in very nice condition with no visible hairline. There are some losses to the enamel on the band (profile) and while the enamel to the back is complete, there is significant surface scratching to the enamel at the top of the case, above the monogram. One rose-cut diamond to the monogram is significantly and noticeably larger than the rest and it may be a period replacement.
The enamel on the brooch is in good condition, with some small surface chips, possibly restored, at the edges in three small spots.

Catalogue Note
Similar examples, all featuring black enamel and diamond-set cases, are illustrated in Loring, J., Tiffany Timepieces, p. 21. Loring notes that these movements were also made in Geneva, like the present lot, and that the cases were designed and made in Tiffany's New York atelier.
