Catalogue Note

The German composer and pianist Ludwig van Beethoven was born in Bonn December 17th, 1770. Since childhood, he demonstrated a strong interest in music. Later, he moved to Vienna, where he studied with one of the most prominent composers of the Classical period, and quickly gained a reputation as a virtuoso pianist. Considered to have been the most crucial figure in the transitional period between the Classical and Romantic eras in Western classical music, he remains one of the most famous and influential composers of all time.

The present lot, with its finely enameled portrait of Beethoven, was possibly produced to commemorate an important anniversary of the composer.
