Catalogue Note

Comparative Literature:
Pierre Arizzoli-Clémental, Versailles, Furniture of the Royal Palaces 17th and 18th centuries, Vol. 2, p. 99, no. 29.

Although at first sight this commode with its tapering projecting columns with spirally turned headers seems to be in the manner of that other celebrated 18th century ébéniste Weisweiler, there is in Versailles, a chest of drawers, one of a pair delivered in 1773 for the Bedchamber of the Duchesse de Bourbon at the Palais-Bourbon in Paris by Leleu. Although the frieze and corner mounts differ, there is a diaper motif on the two drawers and identical handle mounts which must almost certainly have inspired the maker of the present piece.
