Catalogue Note

'It is interesting to note that, though a modern of moderns, Zuloaga does not assume a dislike for details. Every variation of a pattern of lace, and most of his models wear Spanish mantillas, is worked out in perfect detail. The folds of drapery, whether in a gown or in a covering over a divan, are marvellously done. One feels the softness of the velvet or silk in imagination between one's fingers; it is possible even to tell just what sort of fabric a woman in his pictures is wearing, whether it be satin, taffeta or ribbed silk'. ('Zuloaga will Paint Portrait in Washington', in The Baltimore Sun, 1 February 1925, pp. 2 & 5).
