Condition

The canvas is not relined but has been striplined along the left tacking edge. There are some strokes of retouching visible under ultraviolet light, notably along 2 interlocking repaired tears in the leftmost monk (patched on the reverse), a 4 by 0.5cm stroke in the right of the sky, and a minor stroke above the road. There is a 4cm unrepaired tear with paint flaking in St Francis' back (visible in the catalogue illustration).

This is a réplique by Bénouville based on his most famous work exhibited at the Paris Salon of 1853, and bought by the French state for the Musée du Luxembourg, and now in the Musée d'Orsay.
