Barye a beaucoup étudié d'après l'Antique et les grands peintres et sculpteurs du passé. Notre dessin est probablement un croquis d'après l'oeuvre d'un maître. Mais on ne peut exclure qu'il s'agisse d'une première pensée pour un groupe non réalisé.
