The painting appears in good averall condition; it is on its original canvas which is slightly wrapped by places and should be restreched; a thin net of cracks is visible in the dark parts and in the lower part of the face which is not bothering the view; one retouching (0,5 diam) is visible at naked eye, in the background, near the right hear. Under UV light: several small retouchings are visivle in the lower part of the face, in the mouth and on both sides of the eyes; a few older retouchings are visible on the left edge of the face and on the shoulder.

Jean-François Batailhé (1817-1875), professeur libre à la faculté de médecine de Paris, était un ami intime de Carpeaux, qu'il guérit en 1855 d'une grave affection des yeux. Il l'aida dans ses études d'anatomie et fut pour lui un soutien et un conseiller précieux.
Ce portrait a vraisemblablement été peint en avril-mai 1874, lorsque le médecin accourt au chevet de Carpeaux à Paris depuis son village dans le Tarn, où il s'était retiré. Ce très beau portrait tout en matière traduit bien le dialogue entre le patient et son malade, et au-delà, l'amitié sincère qui réunissait les deux personnages.
Un buste en plâtre représentant le Dr Batailhé vers 1863-1864, est conservé au Musée des Beaux-Arts de Valenciennes.
