Condition
Très bon état général avec quelques éclats et retouches à plusieurs endroits notamment au col et au drapé de son manteau ; (petits manques rebouchés et trous de bulles d'air). Points métalliques visibles à plusieurs endroits. Petits éclats aux angles du socle.

Catalogue Note
Le Comte Samuel Welles de la Valette (1843-1893) vécut aux Etats-Unis, à Boston, jusqu'au décès de son père, James Welles. Il fut alors adopté par le Marquis Charles de la Valette, qui avait épousé sa mère Adeline Fowle. Devenue Marquise de la Valette, celle-ci avait fait la connaissance de Carpeaux alors que son époux était ambassadeur de France auprès du Saint-Siège. Témoignage de la clientèle fortunée dont il jouit désormais, le sculpteur réalisa d'abord en 1861 un buste d'elle (plâtre, musée d'Orsay, inv. no. RF 1056), avant de réaliser le portrait de son fils.
