Catalogue Note

The bold, neat script on this Qur'an leaf is typical of multi-volume Qur'an manuscript produced in the Islamic West during the 13th and 14th century under the Almohad and Marinid dynasties. Although this type has been associated with Moroccan production, it was also employed on manuscripts of Iberian origin.

Two folios from the same Qur'an are in the Freer Gallery of Art, Smithsonian Institution, Washington D.C., acquired in 1929 (see Fu, Lowry and Yonemura 1986, pp.118-9). For discussions of Maghribi scripts and Qur'ans see Fraser and Kwiatowski 2006, nos.17-21, pp.64-83, and James 1992a, pp.86-95, 212-225.
