Condition

Good condition overall; wear consistent with age and use within the culture. Old repair using staples to the proper left crescent. Small section at the end of the proper right crescent broken and glued. A few cracks to the metal plates, as visible in the catalogue illustration.

Catalogue Note

Cette figure de reliquaire mbulu ngulu à décor d'étroites lamelles de laiton disposées de part et d'autre de la bande médiane, se distingue également par le volume remarquable de la coiffe et de la base en losange. Perrois (1985 : 48), de même que Chaffin (1979 : 164) s'accordent pour considérer les figures de reliquaire au visage décoré de lamelles comme les plus anciennes - critère redoublé ici par l'absence de bouche et par la profondeur de la patine. cf. Chaffin (1979 : 185) pour un exemplaire très comparable aujourd'hui conservé au musée du quai Branly, collecté en 1883 par Léon Guiral dans la région de Franceville.
